Samantha Arten, Ph.D in Musicology

I hold a Ph.D in musicology from Duke University (2018). My dissertation,¬†“The Whole Booke of Psalmes, Protestant Ideology, and Musical Literacy in Elizabethan England,” argued that the English Reformation’s primary hymnal attempted to advocate for musical literacy for the common people and served as a largely unexamined but crucial source of music education in the period. My research specialties are¬†Reformation sacred music, early music printing, and the relationship between music and theology. In addition to my work as a music historian, I am also a professional soprano with a focus in early music, singing primarily in liturgical church choirs and with Baroque ensembles.
